THE IMPORTANT ENDTIME ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN OUR LIVES
(Note: Many words capitalized for emphasis throughout this paper.)
The Holy Spirit has a very important and distinct role in our lives in these Endtimes. It is to prepare believers for the coming Rapture, by perfecting them and conforming them to the image of Christ. God sent Jesus Christ to save us from our sins Jn3:16. Then after Jesus went back to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to complete God’s plan for mankind, and in us! Jesus said ‘My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work’ Jn4:34. Since the work of God was not yet finished on earth, Jesus came to us by filling us with His Spirit. He said ‘I will not leave you comfortless, I WILL COME TO YOU’ Jn14:18; ‘..It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the COMFORTER will not come unto you; but if I depart, I WILL SEND HIM UNTO YOU’ Jn16:7.
The Comforter is the Holy Ghost Jn14:26; ‘the Spirit of Truth’ Jn15:26. As we approach the culmination of God’ s 6000-year plan for mankind since Adam, the Holy Spirit now abides and resides in all those who are filled with the Holy Spirit Jn14:16, to finish God’s work on earth. Before leaving his disciples, Jesus said ‘ye shall be Baptized With the Holy Ghost not many days hence’ Ac1:5; And ‘..ye shall receive Power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea.. and unto the uttermost part of the earth’ Ac1:8. After being raised from the dead, Jesus ‘was made a quickening Spirit’ 1Co15:45. Jesus said ‘..as the Father raiseth up the dead. even so the Son quickeneth whom he will’ Jn5:21. He said ‘..this is the will of Him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life.. I will raise him up at the last day’ Jn6:40. The last day is quickly coming upon us as the world and its people are entering into increasing distress and perplexity Lk21:25!
Today our world is faced with unprecedented economic, financial, and moral problems, and is on the verge of collapse. All the major currencies of the world, such as the US$, Euro €, British Pound £, and Japan Yen ¥ are in deep trouble because of enormous debt due to uncontrolled spending. Also, worldwide natural disasters such as major earthquakes, hurricanes, diseases, and pestilence are occurring in greater intensity and frequency. With a possible Middle East nuclear war looming involving the Superpowers, we are heading into the period that Jesus prophesied: ‘For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time..nor ever shall be’ Mt24:21. Thus, the Holy Spirit has a very important role in these last days to deliver us in a world that is literally falling apart before the Great Tribulation ensues!
Who Is The Holy Spirit- His Ministry and Role In a Spirit-filled Believer’s Life?
Who is the Holy Spirit? The Bible tells us that ‘God is a Spirit’ Jn4:24, and that there is only ‘One Spirit’ Ep4:4.The Holy Spirit is the 3rd person of the triune God- the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The Holy Spirit is ‘the Spirit of Jesus Christ’ Php1:19. The Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost are synonymous, and their names are often used interchangeably Jn7:39,Lk4:1,Ac2:4. Therefore, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Ghost found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, are the ‘same Spirit of God’ 1Cor12:4. The term Holy Spirit is found only 7 times in the entire Bible. The term Holy Ghost is used 89 times, but only in the New Testament.
Other names for the Holy Spirit are ‘the Spirit of your Father’ Mt10:20; ‘the Spirit of Truth’ Jn14:17,16:13; ‘the Spirit of Holiness’ Ro1:4; ‘the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus’ Ro8:2; ‘the Spirit of Christ’ Ro8:9; ‘the Spirit of Adoption’ Ro8:15; ‘the Spirit of Promise’ Ep1:13; ‘the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation’ v17; ‘the Spirit of Grace’ Heb10:29; ‘the Spirit of Glory’ 1Pe4:14, and ‘the Spirit of Prophecy’ Re19:10. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter Jn14:16, and our Advocate 1Jn2:1. The Holy Spirit is ‘the Spirit of Power, and of Love, and of a Sound Mind’ 2Ti1:7. The Holy Spirit is also ‘Christ in us, the hope of glory’ Co1:27. Like Jesus, we also need to be ‘full of the Holy Ghost’ Lk4:1, and with Power’ Ac10:38. All these names of the Holy Spirit above are very important, because they describe the Holy Spirit’s ministry and role in a Spirit-filled believer’s life.
The Holy Spirit- the Power of God Within Us
The Holy Spirit is the Power of God that does the works of God. Zech4:6 states ‘Not by might, nor by Power, but by my Spirit..’ . Jesus said ‘..ye shall receive Power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon us’ Ac1:8. God have given us ‘the Spirit of Power..’ 2Ti1:7. Jesus said ‘ He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father’ Jn14:12. Jesus did not begin His ministry or do any miracles until after He was baptized with the Holy Ghost. He did not heal anyone or cast out devils till after His baptism in the Jordan River. Lk3:22 tells ‘..the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him’. Jesus declared ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised..’ Lk4:18,19. Jesus was ‘anointed with the Holy Ghost and with Power..’ Ac10:38. Like Jesus, we should minister only after we have received this Power, and only when the Holy Spirit leads us Ro8:14. Jesus said ‘All Power is given unto me in heaven and in earth’ Mt28:18. Jesus gave us His Power when He baptized us with the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote ‘And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of Power’ 1Co2:4. The Holy Spirit is the Power of God in us to finish God’s work before Jesus returns to earth!
The Holy Spirit’ s Role- Our Teacher and Our Guide
Besides empowering us to witness Jesus to the world, the Holy Spirit has the unique role in changing every believer’s life to be like Jesus. Jn14:26 tells ‘But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you’. Jn16:13,14 states ‘Howbeit when he, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he Speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you’.
When we are filled with the Holy Spirit Ep5:18, it is the Spirit’s job is to teach us all things, guide us into all truth and show us of things to come. Paul prayed that God would give us the ‘Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of (Jesus Christ); ..that ye may know the hope of (God’ s) calling, and what is the riches of the Glory of God’s inheritance in the saints, and ..the exceeding greatness of (God’s) Power toward us who believe..’ Ep1:17-19.
The Holy Spirit’s Job- To Bring Forth The Sons Of God Like Jesus Christ
The Holy Spirit’s job is to also bring forth the Sons of God– to change them ‘into the same image from Glory to Glory’ 2Co3:18 like Jesus; ‘to be conformed to the image of (Jesus)’ Ro8:29; to quicken us for the coming Rapture Ro8:11. The Holy Spirit’s job is to manifest the Sons of God to the world, to deliver them ‘from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God’ Ro8:19,23. Jesus through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, shall ‘.. change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his Glorious Body.. according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself’ Php3:21. Then Ro8:14 defines who the Sons of God are: ‘For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the Sons of God’!
The Baptism With the Holy Ghost (BWHG)- the Power of God Given to Believers
The importance of the Baptism with the Holy Ghost for every believer cannot be overstated. To have the Holy Spirit is a must for every believer in Christ! Before ascending into heaven, Jesus commanded his disciples to wait in Jerusalem ‘until ye be endued with Power from on high’ Lk24:49; for ‘..ye shall be Baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence’ Ac1:4, and ‘..Ye shall receive Power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me..’v8. Ten days later on the day of Pentecost, they ‘were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance’ Ac2:4.
The BWHG is the Power of God given to every believer to witness Jesus Christ. When we are spirit-filled, we become ‘the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in us’ 1Co3:16; our bodies are ‘the temple of the Holy Ghost’ 1Co6:19. The Power of God then resides in us to do His work, to bring forth deliverance and healing. Jesus said ‘.. these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover’ Mk16:17,18!
The Gift of the Holy Ghost- Praying in the Spirit
The Book of Acts of the Apostles cites 10 instances where people were Baptized With the Holy Ghost (BWHG) Ac2:4,38;4:31;8:17,18;9:17;10:38,44; 15:8;18:25,26;19:6. The Baptism empowers us to witness Jesus to the world. Like the early disciples, we should first be BWHG before serving the Lord. Jesus said to his disciples ‘.. I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with Power from on High’ Lk24:49. An evidence of the Holy Spirit Baptism is ‘Praying in the Spirit’ or ‘Speaking in an unknown tongue’ 1Co14:4.
When Peter gave his anointed message on the day of Pentecost, the multitude was convicted in their hearts, and asked ‘what shall we do’ . Peter said ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost’Ac2:38. Then 8 years later in Caesara, Cornelius and his kinsmen were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and spoke with tongues Ac10:46. Upon returning to Jerusalem, Peter had to explain to the apostles and brethren why he went to Cornelius, a Gentile. He said ‘the Spirit bade me go’ Ac11:12, and ‘the Holy Ghost fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning’ v15. ‘God gave them the ‘Like Gift’, as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ’ v17.
Clearly, we see here that the ‘Like Gift’ that Cornelius and kinsmen received was the ‘Gift of the Holy Ghost’ that Peter spoke of on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem about 8 years before. It was the same ‘Speaking with other tongues’ experience Ac2:4,38 that the 120 disciples received that day Ac1:15- the gift given to all those who believed on Him. Praying in the Spirit should never be denied, belittled, or mocked! It is the Gift of the Holy Ghost as mentioned in Ac2:38!
However, there are other very important evidences of the BWHG. An evidence of the Spirit Baptism is Love. Paul wrote ‘..the Love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is Given unto us’ Ro5:5. The following are the categorization of the 9 Gifts of the Spirit as found in 1 Corinthians 12: the Power gifts-‘healing, miracles, and faith’; the Vocal Gifts- ‘prophecy, tongues, and interpretation’; the Intuitive Gifts- ‘words of knowledge, words of wisdom, and the discerning of spirits’. The 9 Fruit of the Spirit are listed as Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, Temperance..’ Ga5:22,23. Paul wrote ‘For God has not given us the Spirit of fear, but of Power, and of Love, and of a Sound Mind’ 2Ti1:7. Thus, there are other Gifts of the Spirit also, plus the Fruit of the Spirit associated with being filled with the Holy Spirit Ep5:18.
The Holy Bible and the Holy Spirit- Both Required To Perfect Us and Make Us Rapture Ready
The Holy Bible and the Holy Spirit are two very important essentials for our personal holiness and for the Rapture. Without the Word of God, we cannot be conformed to the image of Christ! Jesus said ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God’ Mt4:4. In the garden of Gethsemane before his death, Jesus prayed ‘..Sanctify them through thy Truth: thy Word is Truth’ Jn17:17. The apostle Paul prayed that Christ would ‘sanctify and cleanse (us) with the washing of water by the Word’ Ep5:26.
Also, without the indwelling Holy Spirit, whose job is to teach us, guide us, give us revelations and understanding, and to change us, we cannot go unto Perfection and win the prize that Paul so desired. Paul wrote ‘I press toward the mark for the prize of the High Calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be Perfect, be thus minded..’ Php3:14,15. The Rapture is the Prize of the High Calling of God in Christ Jesus! Thus, the Holy Bible and the Holy Spirit are two very important essentials needed to work together to help us to be perfected and to make us Rapture Ready!
God’s Great Desire- To Bring Forth Many Sons Like Jesus Christ Unto Glory
God’s great desire is to bring forth many Sons and Daughters unto Glory- to change and conform them into the image of Christ. 1Jn3:1 states ‘Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the Sons of God.. when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is’. Heb2:10 states ‘For it became (God) ..in bringing many Sons unto Glory, to make (Jesus) the captain of their salvation Perfect through sufferings’. Here Perfect means to come to maturity or completion, and sons include both Sons and Daughters.
The Holy Spirit’s job is to bring forth many Sons unto Glory for God! 2Co3:18 states ‘we.. are changed into the same image from Glory to Glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord’. Ro8:16-18 tell us ‘The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God, heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also Glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the Glory which shall be revealed in us’. Ro8:29-30 state ‘For whom (God) did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that (Jesus) might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom (God) did predestinate, them He also called.. also justified.. He also Glorified’.
1Co15:51-53 state ‘Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound.. and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on Incorruption, and this mortal must put on Immortality’. The Holy Spirit will complete this work in us when Jesus returns for us in the Rapture 1Th4:17!
The Rapture- the Most Important Work of the Holy Spirit in Our Lives in the Last Day
Finally, the Rapture is the most important work of the Holy Spirit in the last day. Paul wrote ‘But if the Spirit of (God) that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, (God) that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you’ Ro8:11. In 1Co6:11, it states ‘God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own Power’ . At the appointed time, the Spirit of God will raise us up in the Rapture like He raised Jesus up from the dead. 2Co4:14 states ‘Knowing that (God) which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you’ .
Here again, it is emphasized that the Holy Spirit is the Power of God that indwells and works in us to change us ‘to be conformed to the image of his Son’ Ro8:29, and to raise us up in the coming Rapture! Paul wanted us to know ‘..what is the hope of (God’s) calling, and what the Riches of the Glory of (God’s) Inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his Power to us–ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty Power’ Ep1:18,19.
Paul was speaking of the Rapture! ‘Now unto (God) that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the Power that worketh in us’ Ep3:20. That great Power that works in us is the Power of the Holy Spirit! The quickening Power of the Holy Spirit that works in us will take us out in the coming Rapture, when the Great Tribulation begins: ‘For ..the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words’ 1Th4:16-18.
Finally, The Gospel of Luke tells us how you can receive the Holy Spirit if you haven’t yet or are not sure. Lk11:13 states ‘If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?’. Just simply ask God for His Spirit.. pray and receive Him by faith! AMEN!
